A SEVEN-goal haul from young St Kilda listed player Matthew Ferguson helped the Casey Scorpions to an emphatic 118-point win over the Northern Bullants at Casey Fields.
The Scorpions dominated the midfield battle and held the Bullants to six goals for the match, including only one for the first half.
After the loss, Northern Bullants' playing coach David Teague said he had felt for his defenders, who were bombarded by exceptional delivery to the Casey forwards.
"We got beaten to the ball," he said. "They won the contested ball and they got the ball forward and put our defence under a lot of pressure. To be honest, I felt sorry for some of our defenders the way the ball was coming in.
"All the possessions they had, I think there was some blokes that put their mates under the pump more than they should have."
Ferguson was the forward who benefited most from the good delivery but he suffered his own inaccuracy. The regular backman kicked seven goals, six points and had one shot that sailed out of bounds on the full.
Casey coach Greg Hutchison said he has been waiting for the chance to move the 23-year-old into the forward line for a while.
"We know he can play defence and we sort of planned for a while to get him up (into) the forward line," Hutchison said.
"I'd used him a couple of times in cameo appearances during games but I wanted to use him more forward and today the opportunity presented itself.
"He leads well, he is a good mark. He probably should have kicked another four or five because he missed some easy ones. I hope he gets the opportunity at AFL level again soon."
Ferguson's Saints teammate Clinton Jones was best afield, having 32 possessions, four tackles and a goal.
Hutchison praised the midfielder, particularly for his improved disposal.
"The way he used the ball was better today," he said. "He has been able to get a lot of it but he has turned the ball over a bit over the last month or so. So it was good to have some real positive signs today."
Leigh Fisher could come under consideration to return to the Saints' line-up after his 25 disposals and two goals. Aaron Fiora had 22 touches.
Meanwhile, Williamstown downed Sandringham by 64 points at Burbank Oval. The Seagulls are lying second on the ladder to North Ballarat, whose percentage is just .38 ahead.
