IT'S been three long years since Rebecca Twigley, the woman dubbed the Victoria Beckham of the AFL, last teetered along the Brownlow red carpet in "that" little red dress.
Her highly anticipated entrance was made at 6pm in a gunmetal grey gown by Perth designer Celestial Tenielle. She looked stunning, but it was no Twigley moment. However, there were plenty of others who tried for their own "Twigley moment".
Bomber Adam McPhee's fiancee, Bree Hateley, a fashion boutique owner, enlisted Ruth Tarvydas the Perth-based designer responsible for Twigley's red dress three years earlier. She wore a black backless gown that was cut precariously low at the back and front and trimmed with silver beading.
Business has certainly boomed for Tarvydas since 2004. At least half a dozen WAGs were wearing a Tarvydas-designed gown last night, including Kaiti Williams, the partner of St Kilda's Jason Gram, in a stunning champagne-coloured, body-hugging, beaded number.
For the most part, though, this year's Brownlow fashion was elegant and demure. Most women wore modest, floor-grazing gowns, with just a handful of exceptions including Tiger Nathan Brown's girlfriend, Sally Proud, who went short in a knock-out, long-sleeved cream lace mini-shift by Camilla and Marc.
Glossy silks and satins also proved popular, particularly in ivory, white and oyster hues. More than a dozen girls arrived in slinky cream gowns.
Metallics in silver and gold, complete with highlight sequins and beading, were also favourites. So too, red. Among the best-dressed were Bomber Matthew Lloyd's wife, Lisa, in a red Scanlan & Theodore column dress; Fremantle Docker Matthew Pavlich's girlfriend, Lauren O'Shannassy, in a white and silver floor-length gown with oversized shoulder bow by ae'lkemi; and Cat Gary Ablett's girlfriend, Lauren Phillips, in a lace-trimmed, dove grey gown by Melbourne designer Thurley.
