West Coast AFL star midfielder Daniel Kerr was fined $2,000
today after admitting to an assault at a party in Perth.
Kerr, 24, of Kardinya, was due to be tried next week in the
Fremantle Magistrate's Court after previously pleading not guilty
to two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm.
His father, Roger Kerr, also of Kardinya, was also charged over
the alleged party fracas and is expected to still go to trial as
scheduled on August 13.
The charges were laid after a party in the southern suburb of
Attadale on January 13.
Daniel Kerr appeared in the Fremantle court today, where he
pleaded guilty to one of the charges against him after the second
was dismissed for lack of evidence.
He was fined $2,000 for the assault occasioning bodily harm.
His father, who played for the East Fremantle Football Club in the
1980s, will be tried next week on two charges of assault
occasioning bodily harm and two of assault.
Daniel Kerr finished second in the Brownlow Medal count in 2005
and third last year despite being ineligible for the award because
of suspension.
The midfielder was one of West Coast's best players in last year's
premiership victory over Sydney.
Kerr is no stranger to bad publicity, having been involved in a
brawl with fellow Eagles star Ben Cousins in 2002, in which Cousins
broke his arm during post-season celebrations.
Kerr was named earlier this year as one of the 50 hottest
sportspeople by an Australian sports magazine.
The club later said Magistrate Peter Micheledes had accepted that Kerr had been provoked "and that he had struck the victim only once."
"The club will impose no additional sanction and will make no
further comment."
