SANDRINGHAM kicked nine third-quarter goals to set up a 37-point win over the Casey Scorpions in their VFL clash yesterday at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
The Zebras trailed Casey by 20 points at half-time after the Scorpions kept the home team to just one point in the second quarter, but came home strongly with help from star forward Nick Sautner, who kicked three second-half goals.
A strong breeze played havoc with Sandringham's forwards in the second term, and coach Andy Lovell was pleased with the way his side responded. "We were really disappointed in our second quarter." Lovell said. "We started well, we played to instructions really well and then we just went right away from it and our work rate really dropped off.
"But to respond the way they did in the second half was really positive. We've got a bit of work to do but it was a pleasing win."
Both sides were stacked with AFL-listed players. Sandringham had Adem Yze, Jared Rivers, Matthew Whelan and Mark Jamar, while Casey played with Matt Maguire, Clinton Jones, Brendon Goddard and Charlie Gardiner.
Casey coach Greg Hutchison said limited use of the St Kilda players particularly Jones and Goddard contributed to his side's poor third quarter.
"We had to make a couple of adjustments due to some requirements that we needed for some players next week so that impacted on us a little bit." Hutchison said.
Frankston had a 16-point win against the Northern Bullants, 14.13 (97) to 11.15 (81) with Aaron Murray and Dean Limbach kicking four goals apiece.
