I LIKE Terry Wallace.
When Terry first took over Richmond, I remember some people saying they trust him like a snake-oil salesman.
Just for the record, I've never seen or met a snake-oil salesman but I believe this antiquated expression is racist and I think snake-oil salesmen should be afforded the same respect as any other salesmen.
For those who called Terry a snake-oil salesman, this is an outrageous slur that's if you are racist against snake-oil salesmen, which you shouldn't be and you should be ashamed of yourselves. In saying that, I hope I'm not being racist against racists, which could make me a racist, I think.
Anyway, for those of you who hold no prejudices against snake-oil salesmen and were calling Terry a snake-oil salesman because you think snake-oil salesmen are outstanding citizens, this story is not about you.
Of course, I have never imagined Terry to be a snake-oil salesman but I always thought he would make an excellent coconut-oil salesman when his days at Richmond are over.
I also believe Federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson will make a super alco-pop salesman but that's for another column.
Back to racism; it's in the news at the minute because football historian Gillian Hibbins called Adam Goodes a racist after Goodes said that when indigenous Australians play "football with a clear mind and total focus, we are born to play".
I'm still not sure what race Goodes was being racist to but if it was his own race, that might be permissible and he certainly shouldn't be criticised by an old "honky" who was seemingly reading something between the lines that wasn't there.
If he was saying Anglos were NOT born to play and he was being racist against un-co white-fellas, this, too, is maybe "permissible racism", given that Anglos did come to his ancestors' land and sort of take it over.
But these are matters we should not speak of because it's indigenous round and everyone's happy and the jewel in the round's crown (sorry for using a monarchist symbol there) is the Dreamtime at the 'G game.
And Terry must be happy to see his Tiges a $1.35 favourite to touch up the futuristic Bombers ($3.05).
Take the Tiges by more than 19.5 points at $1.90 and look at a multi with the Swans ($2.45) against Port ($1.52) and the Hawks at $3.50 for the highest score of the round against Melbourne. I will be putting the Roos into my multi with a 17.5-point start against the Bulldogs and taking the $4.10 on the Brisbane Lions and Saints game, either team under 15.5 points.
And yes, it's true; I have lobbied the AFL to change the name of the "Dreamtime" game because dreaming could infer some sort of vagueness or fanciful illusions of grandeur. I suggested the catchy "Imagination Time at the 'G," but Andy said, "No", and called me a racist.
I called him a sexist. He then reminded me I was a white bloke who was supposed to write about punting. He had a point.
