JUST minutes after the first AFL drafts picks were announced dozens of online footy forums were running hot as fans tried to find out more about little-known players.
On talkingcarlton.com one puzzled fan wrote "Who is Dennis Armfield?!?". Another replied by posting links to the No. 46 pick's social networking Myspace page.
"Reading his Myspace he seems OK. Works as a concreter apparently has a cute girlfriend and possibly raised by a single Dad who he lists as his hero," the fan wrote. "Funnily it lists his wage as less than 30K that'll change mate."
Another wrote: "Denis has gone. We have Dennis now. Two Ns are better than one and his girlfriends (sic) alright!).
Photos of players, links to their VFL stats and Youtube videos of them in action were uploaded at a rapid pace as fans came to grips with the new draftees.
On magpies.net one AFL devotee added posts every couple of minutes from the live broadcast on sports radio SEN, but was flummoxed when it came to pick No. 47. "Tobias Thoolen?" he wrote and another replied: "Check out his Myspace for all your stalker needs before the club invariably gets rid of it in the next few days."
On his MySpace page Thoolen describes himself as a Bulldogs fan with a beautiful girlfriend. Under favourite books he writes "Never tried 'em".
One Collingwood contributor, identified as Jock McPie, wrote: "Gee, you know you're old when the footy team starts drafting players born in the nineties."
On Richmond's puntroadend.com fansite the forum's administrator, Rosy23, summarised the mood online. "It's a rare event for everyone to be happy with the drafts but all in the chatroom were unanimous that we had awesome selections."
And the comments were similarly euphoric on Melbourne fansite demonland.com with No. 21 pick Addam Maric.
"Just heard him speak on the radio. His maturity level is brilliant! Said he trained with the dees for a week for his AIS program, said we have a nice young list."
