JACK Watts is yet to officially don a Melbourne guernsey and has met only one of his teammates, but in the eyes of the club he's already earned a place in its 150-year history.

The 17-year-old No. 1 draft pick was presented with his new No. 4 guernsey yesterday by six-time Demons premiership player Ron Barassi, who urged him to emulate a one-time custodian of that number: Hall of Fame legend Norm Smith.

"I'm sure you'll add honour to this," Barassi said of the jumper. "It's a tough task, but I'm sure you'll have a really good go at doing it, and we hope you do."

"Hope" was the overwhelming theme of Watts' induction.

Melbourne chairman Jim Stynes and chief executive Cameron Schwab both used the word to describe the effect of the year 11 student's arrival at this year's wooden spooners.

"This is a pretty special moment in the history of our football club," Stynes said. "Basically, Jack is now a new cog, he's been added to the history of our club and will be providing a lot of hope as we go forward."

Demons coach Dean Bailey said he did not believe Watts would be burdened by the lofty expectations expressed by the club's hierarchy yesterday.

"The reason Jack gets the pressure, and he's already said it, is that he's the No. 1 pick … people want to know everything about the No. 1 pick … but the other guys that we've drafted as well, they know that there's a lot of responsibility on them (too)," Bailey said.

"Jack said it yesterday that, 'Once you get picked, we all get to training and we all start on the same white line, and then it's a matter of how hard and how effectively you train to see who gets the first chance to play'."

Watts has received calls and text messages from many of his prospective teammates, but has met only first-year midfielder Cale Morton, who was part of the Demons' welcoming delegation last week. He is expected to meet many today at a weights session at the Junction Oval, provided his responsibilities at Brighton Grammar do not interfere with that plan.

"I've still got school for another week and a bit, (but) I think I might head down tomorrow to just get introduced to the club, and from there we'll organise my schedule from then on," Watts said.

Bailey reiterated the Demons would select a "young kid", ahead of recycled players such as Ben Cousins, at this month's pre-season draft. He said the club was likely to invite three or four players to audition for the pre-season and rookie drafts.
