AFTER losing Michael Voss to the Brisbane Lions, the AIS-AFL Academy appears set to gain another high-profile mentor in St Kilda great Robert Harvey.
Harvey is believed to be poised to sign as one of coach Alan McConnell's assistant coaches as he begins to explore his footballing life beyond the Saints' midfield.
The 37-year-old will join Nathan Buckley and Jason McCartney as a mentor to the best 30 under-17 players in Australia, with another assistant, Luke Darcy, likely to continue on for a second year.
AFL game development manager David Matthew said Harvey had already been impressive in an ambassadorial role with the league's schools program and was the sort of role model the academy would love to sign up should he not receive any more appealing full-time offers.
"As St Kilda's charged to the finals we've put those discussions aside a bit, but if he's interested, he'll be the ideal sort of person as mentor," Matthews said.
"We've spoken to him about it every other year really, because he's always been weighing up his options. He's a very good person so we'll wait and see what he wants to do, he might get some full-time offers, but the part-time role that Michael Voss and Nathan Buckley have filled have been pretty beneficial for them as well."
Several members of the just-picked academy squad which produced nine of the first 10 draft picks last year will appear on the MCG on grand final day, with Tasmania to play the Northern Territory and Western Australia to take on Vic Metro in two national under-16 finals.
