FOR Brad Green yesterday, the idea of continuing his team's form from the weekend could mean a chance albeit distant of Melbourne playing in the finals. But for St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo, were the Saints to march along with their recent form, it would mean they would be watching the finals from the wrong side of the fence.
Speaking after his 37 possessions helped the Demons to an 11-point victory over Adelaide, Green said he had not given up hope of the side putting together a dramatically improved second half of the year to make the finals.
"My personal (opinion is) we're still in the race for the eight. We won out of 12 games last year we won 11 and only got beaten by West Coast," Green said. "There's still a slim chance we can still make the finals. That's still my goal. I don't know what the coach will say but that's still my goal and I'm sure it's his goal to keep on winning games and hopefully, if not make it, certainly shape it.
"You have always got a slim chance there is always a possibility that anything can happen. Every team on their day can beat anyone, I think. We've proven that once we do get a bit of a run on, we can maintain that run and keep on hopefully winning games."
The Saints have had three straight losses and on recent form, looked anything but finals aspirants. "If it goes on much longer, then we're going to find ourselves watching during September and that hasn't happened for a while and that would be really disappointing. So we need to address it really quickly," Dal Santo said. "There's been a lot of talk even us as players, we've said a lot and it's just time for action now. It's pretty similar to last year, really, for us. We don't want to look back into the past but we know we're capable of clawing our way back."
The road for the Saints is not an easy one, with the team facing five top-eight teams in the next six weeks.
The Demons have four possible inclusions this week, while Aaron Davey (knee), Adem Yze (groin), Matthew Whelan (foot) and Brad Miller (wrist) to have tests.
Green also made light of a recent article saying that he, as well as other prominent Demons, should be considered for trade. He said he had been checking out property guides in Sydney after a move there was suggested.
"I've missed a couple of games with hamstrings (but) I didn't think I was going too bad. I just listen to what the coaching staff and my peers and players say rather than the commentators' opinions," he said. "If you are going to take things like that to heart, you're not playing the right game. We probably deserve it, we were zero and nine, and a few of the guys were always going to come under pressure."
