THE grandmother of former Carlton forward Josh Kennedy has expressed concern over his trading into the West Coast culture.

Kathleen Kennedy, who lives in Watsonia, recently wrote to Carlton savaging the club for trading her grandson to the Eagles in exchange for Chris Judd.

"I said they might think I'm a bitter old lady, but they've hurt one of mine and that's it," she said.

There has been speculation in the wake of the Ben Cousins affair that parents might buck at the shifting of a teenage player to what appears to be a drug-riddled culture, and Kennedy's grandmother affirmed the concerns of families. She said Kennedy's mother, Jenny Peterson, was also worried.

"Right from when it was rumoured first that they would trade Joshua, I was very worried," she said.

"I was not happy with him going into that environment …

"It will turn out all right I'm sure because Joshua is a fine young man and it doesn't matter who he plays for, he will give 100 per cent. He's a wonderful kid.

"(Coach) John Worsfold assured Jenny everything would be fine, so we just hope they're true to their word."

With the Eagles holding four top-20 selections in next month's national draft, there has been speculation about the reaction of families.

But Peter Cotchin, the father of potential draftee Trent Cotchin, said his family had no issues with West Coast's culture, dismissing earlier reports that the family was reluctant . "I don't have issues with Trent going to West Coast," Cotchin said. "That's not a problem."
