AGE may have not wearied them in their minds, but Melbourne veterans Jeff White and Adem Yze admitted yesterday that it may have in the eyes of other clubs.
The Demons yesterday announced they would be delisting the pair, aged 31 and 30 respectively, who have notched up 537 games between them, telling them they would not be part of the club's plans for a youth-focused resurgence.
They will play their last games for the Demons against Richmond on Sunday at the MCG.
Yze, who will earn an AFL life membership this Sunday when he plays his 300th game (271 premiership games, 25 pre-season games, and four international rules matches) and sits third on the club's all-time games record list, behind Robert Flower (272) and David Neitz (306), will nominate for the national draft at the end of the season but gave himself only half a per cent chance of being picked up.
White believes he still has plenty to offer at senior level.
"I'm not hanging my hat on getting a spot at an AFL club next year, but I'm definitely putting my hand up to say, 'Look, my mind feels good, my body feels good, I want to continue playing'," he said.
The Demons will earn the wooden spoon for a season they would like to put behind them, and coach Dean Bailey said the notion of youth was merely another way of looking ahead.
"The club is bigger than any individual, but for the club to move forward, we needed to make that decision," Bailey said.
