RECRUITERS showed they were willing to take a punt on bloodlines, with a dozen players adding their names to their family's football story, including Robbie Tarrant, who was picked up by the Kangaroos with their first selection.
Tarrant, a tall forward like his older brother Chris, was last night celebrating his progression from bank teller to AFL footballer with the Selwoods whose youngest son Scott was drafted by West Coast.
Tarrant will head to Arden Street later today and start training with the club tomorrow.
The 18-year-old said he was initially shocked to be selected but after a few deep breaths the excitement set in. He has already spoken to Chris and is looking forward to an on-field battle with his older brother.
"He is pretty happy that I have gone to the Kangaroos, he is really happy for me," he said yesterday.
Tarrant, who will add to the Roos tall-forward stocks alongside Nathan Thompson and Drew Petrie, is hopeful of breaking into the Roos line-up next year.
Cale Morton, 17, will leave his family's Perth home next week and move to Melbourne after the Demon's selected the midfielder yesterday with pick No. 4.
It's a path well worn in recent times, with his older brothers Mitch crossing to Richmond at the end of last season and Jarryd drafted by Hawthorn last year.
"I don't see it as daunting as I probably should because my two brothers are here," he said yesterday.
"There are a few boys from WA are in the same shoes as me that have to move over and I am sure its going to be a different story for them."
Just over a year ago, the three Morton boys were living at home in Perth, and now all have been moved to Melbourne to pursue their love for the game.
"I just wanted the opportunity to represent an AFL club, whether it was in Brisbane or Adelaide or Geelong, or anywhere through out Australia, I was just happy to take the opportunity. Melbourne have given me that opportunity so I am going to be grateful and work hard and do what I can to help the team," he said.
