Melbourne is gearing up for one of the city's biggest annual events, the grand final parade, with tens of thousands of fans expected to line city streets today to wish their teams luck for tomorrow's big game.

With major streets in the city closed from mid-morning, police are advising motorists to avoid the CBD.

Players and officials from grand final combatants Geelong and Port Adelaide will be driven through the city in open top cars, giving supporters a chance for a final close look before the premiership decider.

Last year 60,000 attended the Swans-West Coast parade and the presence of a Victorian team this year should attract an even bigger crowd, although cool, conditions with a chance of showers may deter some.

Where to see it

Parade starts at midday in St Kilda Road, adjacent to the Victorian Arts Centre. It travels north into Swanston Street, before turning right into Collins Street.

Concludes about 12.50pm with the presentation of the teams on the steps of the Treasury Building by Lord Mayor John So and Essendon champion James Hird.

Traffic

Streets closed from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Transport

Trams running along Swanston Street, Collins Street and St Kilda Road will be interupted during the parade.
