The rivalries are building among some of the nation's elite footballers as they prepare for battle during Saturday's Hall of Fame tribute match at the MCG.

Select players from the Dream Team squad - which is made up of interstate players - held a training session at the MCG this afternoon.

The team, coached by Mark Williams and captained by Adelaide Crow Andrew McLeod, is eager to reign supreme this weekend. Port Adelaide's Kane Cornes said all players were excited about the weekend's match, which marks the 150th anniversary of Australian football.

"There's been some talk about the injuries, but I think the side we've got is amazing and everyone is looking forward to playing against each other."

He said the team would hopefully gel over the coming day while the forward line would be one of its strengths come game day.

"It's been spoken about, but that's probably the main strength of the side. I can't see how you can shut down those three or four superstars that we've got up there," Cornes said.

West Coast Eagle Darren Glass said the team was looking forward to the interstate rivalry.

He said he used to watch State of Origin matches as a young footballer.

"I enjoyed that rivalry and certainly feel like, it's obviously ... a different format, but i still feel like i'm representing Western Australia and the chance to beat the big V."

He said it was a great chance to rub shoulders with other players and coaches, and predicted it would be a high-quality spectacle.

"If I get selected on the night, it's going to be a tough match up whichever way you look at it. But I'm looking forward to the challenge," he said.

Bulldog Adam Cooney - a member of the Dream Team squad - said it was a huge honour to play, despite it being a showcase match. The players would still take it seriously, he said.

"Choco (Mark Williams) made it pretty clear early on that we're here to win and I suppose he's instilled that in the guys already that it's a serious game and we do want to win," Cooney said.

Port Adelaide's Shaun Burgoyne said it was a thrilling opportunity.

"It's something that's really exciting because you don't get to see these players too often".. .you try to see if you can pick their brains about certain aspects."

The Hall of Fame Tribute Match will be played Saturday night at the MCG, to mark the 150th anniversary of Australian football.
