NORTH MELBOURNE has emerged as the boldest player in trade week, having yesterday indicated a surprising willingness to trade No. 1 ruckman Hamish McIntosh, forward Corey Jones and midfielder Daniel Harris.
The Roos, who signed McIntosh to a three-year deal in June, caught all clubs off guard by revealing at the opening of the official trade period that it was prepared to talk about moving the highly regarded big man.
While news of McIntosh's availability drew an angry response from his manager, Tom Petroro, North coach Dean Laidley said it was incumbent on the club to examine the market value of all players to establish if they were worth more to keep or trade.
He insisted the deal would have to be irresistible for McIntosh not to be at Arden Street next year.
"We really value Hamish but you can't say yes or no about a deal until there is something on the table and it would have to be something extremely attractive for us to think about it," Laidley said.
"Having said that, if I was a betting man, I would say he will be here.
"Our three boys whose names are out there and Daniel Harris is the only one who has asked to be traded they are all required players of the footy club but it would be remiss of us if we didn't hear what clubs had to say about them."
Petroro was incensed that his client had been tabled as trade bait, having recently signed a new contract.
"I have spoken to Hamish and under no circumstances does he want to move clubs," Petroro said.
"I am disgusted with the way this has been handled. To think Hamish committed to the club for three years in June this year and the club turns around now and does this to him is appalling.
"When you consider the Gold Coast is coming in and there are clubs wanting ruckmen, we could have done the wrong thing by them and hung out, but he committed to them because he wants to be there and now the club does this.
"Hamish is in Vegas at the moment, I have spoken to him and he is extremely disappointed."
McIntosh enters a trade period with strong interest in ruckmen, with Carlton offering pick 24 for Fremantle beanpole Rob Warnock, and other clubs, such as Richmond and St Kilda, interested in talls.
Richmond and Melbourne yesterday expressed interest in West Coast's Mark Seaby, who has said he wants to leave.
Hawthorn is prepared to discuss ruckman Simon Taylor, who unluckily missed out on the premiership this year after losing his spot as No. 2 ruckman to Brent Renouf.
Carlton football manager Steven Icke confirmed that the club had offered its second-round pick for Warnock, adding that it was surprised at McIntosh's possible availability.
"We would be silly not to look at McIntosh. But we are a bit like the rest of the industry who are asking how has this come about? And why has it come about that he is available? It raises a lot of questions you would want answered first," Icke said.
Brisbane Lions ruckman Jamie Charman could also be in the trade market at the right price, which would be a first-round draft pick an outcome considered unlikely.
