Richmond captain Kane Johnson has apologised to his fellow Tigers after he was arrested for being drunk and urinating in public, the club's football director says.

Johnson was caught urinating outside the Victoria Police complex in St Kilda Road about 2am yesterday, a week after Carlton forward Brendan Fevola was captured by cameras urinating outside a bar in Prahran.

While Carlton decided to issue a warning and a $10,000 fine to Fevola, Richmond has fined its captain $5000 and he will miss this week's game against North Melbourne.

Richmond's football director Greg Miller said the incident was one that Johnson would regret the incident for the rest of his life.

"(Johnson) sets high standards and for him to make that mistake, he will forever regret it," said Miller at the club's Punt Road headquarters this morning.

Miller said Johnson's captaincy and career with the club were not in jeopardy.

He said Johnson had gone "too far" after a night out celebrating his 30th birthday.

"Kane is not a regular drinker. He certainly has not been drinking since Christmas.

"It was his birthday and he celebrated and he went too far."

Miller said Johnson had express his remorse to the players at the club and volunteered to stand out of this weekend's game.

"I think it's admirable," he said.

"You can understand that Kane has strong values (and) he's felt he's let the whole group down."

Johnson was present as Richmond players trained at Gosch's Paddock this morning.

He will appear in court on April 22 after police charged him with public drunkenness.

Richmond is currently second on the AFL ladder after Friday's first-round victory over Carlton by 30 points.
